Chopped Liver 'n Onions

Off to the side
of a gravel road
on a blue plastic tarp

steam rises from the gutted carcass
within spitting distance
of last season's cut-off hooves.

A heart carved
from a deer.
A doe, a deer, a female deer.

Not the sound of music,
still, waste not, want not
slid into a zip lock bag.

An ice chest
frozen for some family
who might have the stomach
we don't.
