A Trumpeter's Swan Song
Louie Armstrong's
Was it sung?
While dying?
A smile on his lips?
Can we
still hear
the air vibrating?
Oh what a wonderful world
when junior band boys and girls
can skip door to door
hawking magazines
for schools, for money
No
winning
gastric dreams of an
all you can eat
ice cream party
propels them to ring doors
What calamity may befall them?
Will the next Herb Alpert or Miles Davis
who depending on his hue
appeal to the mom and pop
or the rebel that's in you?
Fall victim to orthodonture
a mouth full of stainless steel
not brass
wires tightened
like a screw
no ice grill to flash
no trumpeter's clarion call
nothing of note
